The Going Away With Scheme (GAW) gives you the opportunity to achieve the qualification required to take girls on a residential event.
Rainbows can go away for up to 2 days and 1 night, and Brownies, Guides and Rangers can stay away for longer. For more information on residential events for each section, go to the Girlguiding website.
The scheme is open to members who have completed the leadership qualification and currently hold an active role as a leader, commissioner or adviser. To find out more about the scheme, go to the Girlguiding website.
Going Away With Training in Leeds County
Make a start by attending one of our GAW training sessions. These hour and a half sessions are usually held twice a year (spring & autumn) and will introduce you to the scheme, including planning, administration, and making health & safety arrangements.
Following attendance at one of these sessions you will be allocated a mentor to help you complete the qualification.
To view our current GAW training sessions and to make a booking, please go to our training calendar.
GAW Mentors in Leeds County
The Adventure & Events Team include GAW mentors who will guide anyone who is completing the qualification through the GAW scheme and will carry out the assessment at the residential event.
You must have a mentor to sign off your qualification and the team will allocate a mentor to you.
If you are intending to achieve the GAW qualification it is important your mentor is aware of your plans for your residential event. Do not make any definite plans until you have been assigned a mentor, so you can discuss your plans with them – and, importantly, ensure they can attend the event to complete your assessment.
Achieving your Going Away With qualification in Leeds County
If you would like to obtain your Going Away With qualification you will need to complete the following steps before you make any definite plans for a residential event to ensure you are fully supported through the process:
- Speak to your Division Commissioner (or division GAW Adviser/Residential Adviser) – you will need to let them know you plan to run a residential event in order to achieve your qualification.
- Book onto a county GAW training session (see above) – this will introduce you to the scheme and help get you started.
- Ensure you are allocated a mentor – if you have attended a training session you should have been allocated a mentor, if you haven’t (or haven’t been able to attend a training session) ask your commissioner to complete the mentor request form
